What are crossesand how do they work?

A cross (or pipe cross) is a forged fitting with four openings arranged at 90° to each other, used to connect and distribute flow between four pipe runs from a single point. Unlike a standard tee, which branches a line in three directions, a cross lets you tap two perpendicular branches off a single run, useful wherever a piping layout needs a compact four-way junction instead of two separate tees. Our steel crosses are forged as a single piece, then machined and finished to the required thread or weld-end standard, so the fitting matches the same pressure rating as the pipe it connects.

Thread standards and finishes

We finish our cross tees to the four connection standards most requested by piping engineers:

  • NPT (National Pipe Thread Taper) — threaded connection, standard on most oil & gas and general industrial projects
  • SW (Socket-Weld) — welded connection for higher-pressure, leak-critical lines
  • BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper) — threaded connection common on European and UK-spec projects
  • BSPP / G. CIL (parallel gas thread) — parallel threaded connection, typically sealed with a washer or O-ring

Each finish is available across our S.2000, S.3000, S.6000, and S.9000 pressure classes, forged and machined to ASME B16.11 dimensional tolerances.

Materials available

Not every steel cross needs to be a stainless steel cross, we forge each fitting in the grade the application actually calls for:

  • Carbon steel A105N, also available hot-dip galvanized (A105N HDG), for standard-duty piping
  • Low-temperature carbon steel A350 LF2 CL1, for cryogenic and low-temperature service
  • Alloy steel A182 F11 and F22 (chrome-moly), for high-temperature service
  • Austenitic stainless steel A182 F304, F304L, F316L, and F321, for corrosion resistance in process and hygienic applications
  • High-performance alloys, including Alloy 20 (B366 WP20CB-S N08020) and Inconel 625 (B564 UNS N06625), for the most aggressive chemical environments

Available sizes

Our steel crosses are stocked from 1/8" up to 4" nominal pipe size, including reducing configurations. All dimensions are held to ASME B16.11 tolerances, so cross tees from our catalog can be combined with elbows, tees, and couplings from other ASME B16.11-compliant manufacturers.

Applications

Steel crosses are used wherever a piping network needs a compact four-way junction rather than two separate tees:

  • oil & gas gathering and processing lines
  • hydroelectric and geothermal plants
  • nuclear-qualified piping
  • pharmaceutical process skids
  • general industrial systems where reducing the fitting count matters for space, weight, or pressure-drop reasons.

Where corrosion resistance or CIP/hygienic cleaning is required, a stainless steel cross is typically specified instead of the carbon steel version.

Why source your steel crosses from M.E.G.A.?

M.E.G.A. has been forging pipe fittings for over 60 years, and we sell direct: no distributor markup, no waiting on a middleman’s stock. Every cross is produced end-to-end in our own facility: forged, heat-treated, machined, and hydrostatically tested, with full material certification and traceability on every shipment. Our quality system is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and our production is qualified for nuclear-grade applications, the same standard we apply to oil & gas, hydroelectric, and pharmaceutical projects.

Standard sizes ship within 24–72 hours, against a market where lead times of two to four weeks are common. Buying direct from the forge means the same certified product, at a better price, with the traceability a distributor can’t guarantee.
