What are steel half couplings?

Steel half couplings are compact pipe fittings used to create threaded or socket-weld connection points on pipes, tanks, or pressure vessels.

Depending on the application, a half coupling can be supplied with female NPT threading, socket-weld ends, or with a combination of one socket-weld end and one female threaded end. Other thread types, such as BSPP / GAS cylindrical threads or BSPT threads, may also be available according to project requirements.

Half couplings are commonly used to add branch connections, drain points, vent ports, instrumentation taps, or threaded access points to an existing pipeline or vessel. Their compact design makes them a practical solution wherever a secure, pressure-rated connection is required without using a full coupling.

Unlike full couplings, which are generally used to connect two pipes, half couplings are typically used to create a single connection point on a pipe or vessel surface.

How do half couplings work?

Half couplings are installed by welding the socket-weld side to the pipe, vessel, or equipment wall, or by connecting the threaded side to a compatible male-threaded component, depending on the configuration of the fitting.

In a socket-weld half coupling, the pipe or nipple is inserted into the socket and welded around the outside, creating a strong and reliable connection. In a threaded half coupling, the female thread allows the connection of plugs, valves, instruments, branch pipes, or other male-threaded components.

When a half coupling has one socket-weld end and one threaded end, the socket-weld side provides the permanent welded connection, while the threaded side remains accessible for future assembly, maintenance, inspection, or replacement of connected components.

This makes steel half couplings a versatile solution for creating safe and practical connection points in industrial piping systems.

Available materials

We stock and supply steel half couplings across several material grades to match the process conditions and regulatory requirements of each application:

  1. Carbon Steel — Standard (A/SA105N, HDG) — General-purpose high-pressure fittings, up to ~425 °C. The HDG variant adds hot-dip galvanizing.
  2. Carbon Steel Low-Temp (A/SA350 LF2 CL1, LF3) — Steels with guaranteed Charpy impact values: LF2 rated to −46 °C, LF3 (3½% Ni) rated to −101 °C for LNG and ethylene service.
  3. Cr-Mo Alloy Steel — High Temperature (F11, F22, F91) — Refinery/power generation family: 1¼Cr-½Mo (F11), 2¼Cr-1Mo (F22), advanced martensitic 9Cr-1Mo-V (F91, up to 650 °C).
  4. Ferritic / Duplex SS (F5, F51 = Duplex 2205, F53 = Super Duplex, F44 = 6Mo) — Ranging from Cr-Mo ferritics for sour service streams to Super Duplex for concentrated seawater and 6Mo as a cost-effective alternative to nickel alloys.
  5. Austenitic SS (F304/L, F316/L, F317/L, F321, F321H, F347) — The broadest family: from general-purpose F304 to Ti-stabilized (F321/H) and Nb-stabilized (F347) grades for continuous high-temperature service and resistance to intergranular corrosion.
  6. Nickel Alloys (Alloy 20, Hastelloy C-276, Monel 400, Inconel 625) — For extreme environments: concentrated sulfuric acid, wet chlorine, HF, deepwater subsea service, and temperatures up to 980 °C.

Available sizes & pressure ratings

Our threaded steel half couplings are available in a broad size and pressure class range to cover the majority of industrial piping specifications:

  • Nominal bore: ¼" (DN 8) to 4" (DN 100) – with intermediate sizes in ⅜", ½", ¾", 1", 1¼", 1½", 2", 2½", 3", 4’’.
  • Pressure classes: Class 3000, and Class 6000, Class 9000
  • Wall thickness: Conforming to ASME B16.11 dimensional tables.
  • Custom dimensions and special bores available upon request for non-standard projects.

Applications

Thanks to their compact form factor and welding reliability, steel half couplings are found in virtually every sector that relies on industrial piping:

  • Oil & gas – Wellhead and manifold instrumentation taps, chemical injection points, sampling ports on process lines.
  • Chemical and petrochemical – Branch connections for corrosive media handling, reactor vessel nozzles, drain and vent points.
  • Power generation – Steam, condensate, and feedwater lines; turbine and boiler instrumentation tapping.
  • Water and wastewater treatment – Dosing points, pressure gauge connections, flow meter tapping on stainless steel piping.
  • Food, beverage and pharmaceutical – Hygienic stainless steel half couplings (SS 316L, electro-polished) for CIP/SIP-compatible systems.
  • Shipbuilding and offshore – Salt-water-resistant half couplings on hull penetrations and deck piping systems.
  • HVAC and building services – Pressure tapping on chilled water, heating, and compressed air circuits.
